Vintage Photos Portraying American History in Celebration of 4th of July

This Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph by Slava Veder, aptly titled “Burst of Joy,” captured a deeply poignant moment that resonated with millions around the world. Taken on March 17, 1973, at Travis Air Force Base in California, the image portrays the emotional reunion of Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm and his family after his release as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.

Stirm is shown stepping off the plane, probably filled with a mix of relief, exhaustion, and overwhelming joy. His wife, children, and loved ones rush towards him, their outstretched arms and beaming smiles capturing the essence of love, longing, and the sheer elation of reunion.
