#16: Divorce
Divorce in Rome was as practical as marriage itself, often a matter of politics or survival. Picture a woman gathering her belongings after leaving a marriage that no longer served her family’s interests, her dowry reclaimed as a financial safety net.

For the wealthy, divorces were often public affairs, whispered about in the baths and marketplaces. For the poor, they were quieter but no less impactful. While divorce could free a woman from an unhappy union, it also left her navigating societal scrutiny.
