#15: The Oreo Fun Barbie
The Oreo Fun Barbie, released in 1997, was a limited edition doll created in collaboration between Mattel and Nabisco. This Barbie came with an Oreo-themed outfit and a package of miniature Oreo cookies, aiming to celebrate the popular snack. However, the doll faced controversy and was eventually discontinued due to backlash regarding its portrayal of body image.
Critics argued that the doll perpetuated unrealistic beauty standards, as Barbie’s slim physique was seen as incompatible with her indulgence in Oreo cookies. Public scrutiny and concerns about the doll’s potential impact on body image and self-esteem among young girls led to Mattel discontinuing the Oreo Fun Barbie, highlighting the growing awareness of the importance of responsible and body-positive marketing in the toy industry.
